Eye Implant for Producing Tears to Fight Dry Eye Syndrome

Dry eye syndrome may soon be treated with a new implant developed by a team led by researchers at Stanford University. The team identified the afferent neural pathway as being an excellent target for stimulation in order to activate tear production. They built a device that has platinum foil electrodes implanted under the inferior lacrimal gland, with an additional electrode reaching for the afferent ethmoid nerve. A remote control was used to activate the electric stimulation. The study was conducted with laboratory rabbits, some of which had long term wireless stimulators implanted to provide power.

Imperial Healthcare’s Eminent Eye Surgeon Restores Road Accident Victim’s Future

The Imperial Healthcare Institute, a Dubai-based center of excellence in eye care, is in the focus of media attention after the most recent achievement of its eminent eye specialist and medical director, Professor Dr. Vinod Gauba. Using Innovative Microsurgery Laser technology, Dr. Gauba and his team successfully treated the extensive facial and eye trauma suffered by accident victim Ali AHN, restoring his “future as a young man and professional.”

10 Ways To Pure Peeper Perfection

From contacts to Lasik, blinking to sun protection – there’s a whole lot more to the world of optical health than meets the eye. But with these top tips from eye specialist Dr Gauba, you’ll soon be the star pupil…
Blink

It may seem obvious, but we don’t do it enough. Our eyes and their surrounding structures are designed to survive all climates and situations. However, the advent of computers and televisions was never factored in. Every time we stare at one of these screens, our eyes become dry due to tear evaporation. Throw in the high airflow pumped out by AC ducts, and this exaggerates tear loss several fold. Blinking frequently whilst in front of a screen will help spread moisture across the front of your eye and help reduce the symptoms of eye fatigue and dryness.

Wear Sunglasses

Ideally the frames should be wrap-around in design so they block the exposure to sunlight that takes place from the corner. Also, they help reduce dust and dirt getting in the eyes. In addition, pay close attention to lens quality and its UV protection status. It should offer 99 or 100 per cent of UVA and UVB blockage and UV400 protection. Choose polarised lenses if you spend a lot of time by the water

Eminent Dubai Ophthalmologist honored at the House of Lords in London

Dr. Vinod Gauba recognized for his contributions to safe and innovative eye treatments

Internationally acclaimed Dubai-based Consultant Ophthalmologist, Medical Director and Associate Professor at the Imperial Healthcare Institute, Dr. Vinod Gauba has been awarded the prestigious Mahatma Gandhi Gold Medal 2014 for his impressive contributions to healthcare. Known for his constant drive to help the less fortunate and visually impaired, the eminent doctor was presented with the award for his pioneering role in the field of ophthalmology at the House of Lords in London earlier this week.

One of the highest accolades received by a Non Resident Indian (NRI), Mahatma Gandhi NRI Award (Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Samman), is presented only to 20 recipients selected from over 30 million Non-Resident Indians or people of Indian origin for exceptional achievements in various industries.

Commenting on the occasion, recipient of the award, Dr. Vinod Gauba remarked, “This is a historic year for celebrating the great achievements of Mahatma Gandhi. Being a non-resident Indian himself, he selflessly fought for the rights of the weak and less privileged. He was a visionary who always questioned the ways of the world around him and strove to grow in a positive way.” Adding he said: “It is not only a huge honor for me to be bestowed with such an awe-inspiring award, but also a great responsibility to keep the values and virtues of Mahatma Gandhi alive.”

Dr. Gauba has received numerous awards over the years for his outstanding humanitarian, clinical and research work, making innovative progress in the field of ophthalmology. He has also received the Young Surgeon of the Year award at Arab Health in 2012 and was presented with the Young Clinician of the Year award by Cleveland Clinic in 2013.

Dr. Gauba is well recognized for his expertise in dealing with complex cases of eye disease and eyelid plastic surgery along with introducing non-surgical techniques for vision correction (SupraLasik™) to the region. He aims to make eye treatment safer, more effective and accessible to all. His ethical background and exceptional standards of care are highly appreciated by his patients.

“My father moved to Dubai in the early 70’s from the UK and was one of the first British NRI Ophthalmologists in the UAE. With Dubai fast becoming the Middle Eastern healthcare hub, we are proud to possess a premier level of expertise and technology in the UAE; attracting patients not only from the region but from all across the globe.” Dr. Gauba added.

Dr. Gauba is based in Dubai at Imperial Healthcare in Dubai Healthcare City, a multispeciality day surgery center of excellence providing highly specialised eye care and oculo-facial plastic surgery.
